How does laser hair removal work?

The laser technology releases light energy that goes through the skin, and the pigment in the hair follicle and hair shaft absorbs it. Pigments give skin and hair its color, and the energy damages the follicle, which impairs its ability to grow.

Hair follicles in the active growth typically respond best to treatments because it contains more pigment which absorbs more energy. It takes multiple treatments to accomplish the best results because it’s important to “catch” your hair in this active growth phase when you are receiving treatments.

What areas can laser hair removal treat?

This procedure can be performed from almost anywhere on the body including faces, backs, chests, arms, underarms, bikini, and legs.

Am I a good candidate for this hair removal?

Laser hair removal can be safely used on all skin types from very light skin to very dark skin. It is most effective on individuals with medium to dark hair.

Candidates with very light, white, or gray hair are not candidates. However, we will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure based on a variety of factors during your consultation.

How many treatments will I need?

Since your hair grows in three stages, multiple treatments are needed to affect all of the unwanted hair.

How far apart are treatment sessions?

It depends on which area is being treated. In general, face, underarms, arms, and bikini are about 4-6 weeks apart. Back, chest, and legs are about 8-10 weeks apart.

What is an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment?

An IPL laser treatment is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure that uses broad-spectrum light to target skin color and texture concerns. Also known as a photofacial, it uses an “intense pulsed light” handheld device to treat skin damaged from sun exposure, signs of aging, acne, and more.

How It Works

During the treatment, a handheld device emits pulses of light that penetrate the second layer of skin (dermis) and target pigmentation irregularities, sun damage, age spots, vascular lesions, and fine lines.

The light energy is similar to a photo flash and can treat a larger area in one flash than laser therapy. Once the targeted areas of skin absorb the light, collagen production increases and skin tone becomes more even. IPL facial treatments are typically performed in sessions of three and can help rejuvenate the skin, resulting in a smoother, more youthful complexion.

IPL devices offer different light frequency levels depending on the targeted area’s concerns and severity. For instance, one area with sunspots will use a different intensity level than an area being treated for acne scars. Also, if your hyperpigmentation has more redness, we will use one level of light. On the other hand, if you have more age spots with brown discolorations, we will use a different light frequency.
